⚠️ Important: If You're in Active Heavy Withdrawal

Alcohol withdrawal can be medically dangerous for people who drink heavily every day. Symptoms like severe shakes, hallucinations, confusion, seizures, or high fever require medical supervision — often in a hospital setting.

Emmaus Medical & Counseling is an outpatient clinic. If you're in severe active withdrawal right now, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. We're here for the rest of the journey — counseling, medication-assisted recovery, and long-term support to help you stay alcohol-free.

Not sure if you need medical detox first? Call us — we'll talk through your situation and help you figure out the right next step, even if it's not us.

Signs You May Have an Alcohol Problem

You don't need to "hit rock bottom" before reaching out. Many of our patients still have jobs, families, and outwardly "normal" lives — but they know something needs to change.

  • Drinking more or longer than you intended
  • Trying to cut back but not being able to stick with it
  • Spending a lot of time drinking, hungover, or thinking about your next drink
  • Strong cravings — finding it hard to think about anything else
  • Drinking interfering with work, family, or daily responsibilities
  • Continuing to drink despite relationship problems it's causing
  • Cutting back on activities you used to enjoy
  • Drinking in situations where it could be dangerous (driving, etc.)
  • Continuing despite health problems related to alcohol
  • Needing more alcohol to get the same effect (tolerance)
  • Withdrawal symptoms when not drinking (shakes, sweating, nausea, anxiety)
  • Hiding drinking from family, friends, or coworkers

How We Treat Alcohol Use Disorder

Our approach combines medical care, counseling, and ongoing support — all delivered in an outpatient setting so you can continue working, parenting, and living your life while you recover.

1

Comprehensive Assessment

We evaluate your history, current situation, health, and goals to determine the right approach — and to ensure outpatient care is medically appropriate for you.

2

Medication-Assisted Treatment

FDA-approved medications can reduce cravings and support recovery. We'll discuss whether MAT is right for your situation during your evaluation.

3

Individual Counseling

One-on-one therapy that gets to the why beneath the drinking — stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, or whatever's driving use.

4

Ongoing Support

Recovery isn't a 30-day program. We stay with you for the long haul, adjusting your treatment as life evolves.

What Our Patients Say

Real stories from real patients — what changed for them after coming to Emmaus.

★★★★★

I've been with them for a few years now and I'm so glad I dialed their phone number, not knowing who I was talking to, crying so hard I couldn't talk. I'll never forget the Lady who answered and listened without trying to cut me off or rushing off the phone. I felt worthless and that changed before we got off the phone.

— Mary F., Emmaus Patient
★★★★★

I would highly recommend anyone wanting to get help with overcoming addiction. The staff and the doctor are so friendly and understanding. They saved my life and my job. I can never thank them enough.

— Angie S., Emmaus Patient
★★★★★

If I want to go somewhere that really cares about the people and not just the money, then this is the place! They are awesome. Absolutely the best in town.

— John D., Emmaus Patient

Frequently Asked Questions About Alcohol Treatment

If you don't see your question here, just call us — we're happy to talk through anything.

Do I need to go to inpatient rehab first?
Not necessarily. Many people with alcohol use disorder can begin treatment in an outpatient setting like Emmaus. However, if you drink heavily every day and may experience severe withdrawal, you may need medical detox first — typically at a hospital. We'll evaluate your situation honestly during your first call and tell you what's appropriate. If you need a different level of care, we'll help you find it.
Does Emmaus offer detox services?
No. We are an outpatient clinic that provides medication-assisted treatment and counseling for alcohol use disorder. We don't provide medical detoxification, which usually requires 24-hour medical supervision. If you need detox first, we'll help you find an appropriate provider — then we're here for you afterward for ongoing recovery support.
What does outpatient alcohol treatment actually look like?
Outpatient treatment means you come to our clinic (or join a telehealth visit) regularly while continuing to live at home, work your job, and care for your family. Visits typically include medical evaluation, counseling, and any medication management. Frequency varies based on your treatment phase — usually weekly or biweekly visits at first, then less frequent as you stabilize.
Is medication for alcohol use disorder safe?
Yes, when prescribed and monitored by a medical professional. There are several FDA-approved medications that help reduce cravings and support alcohol recovery. They work differently than alcohol and don't produce intoxication. Our providers carefully evaluate which (if any) is right for you and monitor your response over time.
How long does alcohol treatment take?
There's no fixed timeline. Some patients stabilize in a few months; others benefit from longer-term care. Recovery is highly individual, and we adjust your plan as you make progress. The most important thing is that you don't stop treatment too early — research consistently shows that longer engagement with care leads to better outcomes.
Will my insurance cover alcohol treatment?
In most cases, yes. The federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires insurers to cover alcohol and substance use disorder treatment the same as any other medical condition. We accept Medicare, Medicaid, TennCare, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Aetna, and most major commercial plans. We verify benefits for free with no obligation.
How much does alcohol treatment cost without insurance?
Our self-pay rates are intentionally affordable: $150 for your initial intake, $100 for weekly visits, $150 for biweekly visits, and $250 for monthly visits. We never want cost to be the reason you don't get help.
Will my employer find out I'm in treatment?
No. Federal law (42 CFR Part 2) provides extra confidentiality protections for substance use treatment beyond standard HIPAA. We cannot disclose your treatment to employers, family, or anyone else without your written consent. Many of our patients are working professionals whose colleagues have no idea they're in recovery.
I've tried to quit drinking before and failed. Will this be different?
Most people who recover from alcohol use disorder have multiple attempts before finding what works. That's not failure — it's how recovery often unfolds. With medication support, regular counseling, and ongoing care, success rates are significantly higher than trying to quit alone with willpower. We're often where people come after other approaches haven't stuck.
Can I still drink occasionally, or do I have to be completely sober?
For most people with alcohol use disorder, complete abstinence is the safest and most successful path. However, we work with each patient on their individual goals. We're a non-judgmental medical practice, not a 12-step program. Your treatment plan is built around what works for you, with honest conversation about what's medically realistic.
What about co-occurring anxiety or depression?
Many people with alcohol use disorder also have anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns. Often alcohol use started as a way to cope. Our team can address co-occurring conditions as part of your care — or coordinate with your other providers — because treating only the alcohol use without addressing the underlying issues rarely works long-term.
How quickly can I start?
In most cases, same-day or next-day. Call us at 423-202-3008 and we can usually verify your insurance and schedule an intake appointment right away. The hardest step is reaching out — the rest is easier than you expect.

Take the First Step Toward Recovery
