Same-Day Help

Don't wait β€” call today

Since 2006

Nearly 20 years of care

⚠️ If Someone Is Overdosing Right Now

Call 911 immediately. Don't wait. Fentanyl overdoses progress quickly and can be fatal within minutes without intervention.

While Waiting for Help:

  1. Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available β€” fentanyl often requires multiple doses
  2. Lay the person on their side to prevent choking if they vomit
  3. Stay with them β€” naloxone can wear off and overdose can return
  4. Don't leave until paramedics arrive, even if they wake up

Tennessee's Good Samaritan Law and Virginia's Safe Reporting Law protect people who call 911 during overdose emergencies β€” even if drugs are present at the scene. Your call could save a life. Please call.

If you're not in immediate danger but need crisis support, call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. We're here for the rest of the journey β€” long-term recovery support, medication-assisted treatment, and a path forward.

If You're Using Fentanyl, You're Already Surviving Something Most Don't.

If you're reading this, you've already survived something many haven't. Fentanyl has become the deadliest drug crisis in American history β€” and yet here you are, looking for a way out. That matters. You matter.

Maybe you started with prescription painkillers. Maybe with heroin. Maybe you didn't even know what was in your supply. The road that brought you here doesn't determine whether recovery is possible β€” and recovery is possible, even from fentanyl.

At Emmaus, we've been helping people recover from opioid use disorder since 2006. We've watched the crisis evolve from prescription painkillers to heroin to fentanyl. We've adapted. And we've kept showing up. Whatever you've tried before, whatever shame you're carrying, whatever you think we'll judge you for β€” we won't. Come as you are.

What Makes Fentanyl Different

Understanding fentanyl matters β€” because recovery from it requires a slightly different approach than other opioids.

⚑

Extreme Potency

Fentanyl is approximately 50-100 times more potent than morphine. Doses that would be safe for other opioids can be lethal with fentanyl.

🎲

Unpredictable Dosing

Street fentanyl is rarely consistent β€” even within the same batch. Two pills from the same source can contain vastly different amounts.

πŸ’€

Contaminated Supply

Fentanyl now contaminates the supply of cocaine, methamphetamine, counterfeit prescription pills, and other substances β€” often without users knowing.

⏱️

Faster Onset & Tolerance

Fentanyl builds tolerance quickly and creates physical dependence faster than other opioids β€” making withdrawal more intense and quitting alone more difficult.

πŸš‘

Higher Overdose Risk

Fentanyl overdoses progress fast and may require multiple doses of naloxone (Narcan) to reverse. This is why same-day medical treatment matters.

πŸ’Š

Effective Medical Treatment

Despite all of this, medication-assisted treatment is effective for fentanyl use disorder. The medications used in MAT work β€” and they save lives.

Signs You May Need Help

You don't need to be at "rock bottom" to reach out. With fentanyl, waiting can be the deadliest mistake of all. Earlier help means more of your life intact β€” and significantly lower overdose risk.

  • Using fentanyl daily or near-daily to feel normal
  • Strong cravings β€” constant thoughts about your next dose
  • Needing more to get the same effect
  • Withdrawal symptoms when not using
  • Failed attempts to quit on your own
  • Using despite recent overdoses (yours or someone you know)
  • Fear about what's actually in your supply
  • Using alone (which dramatically increases overdose death risk)
  • Hiding use from family, friends, or coworkers
  • Using to manage pain that was never properly addressed
  • Spending most of your money on drugs
  • Friends or family expressing serious concern

What Fentanyl Withdrawal Feels Like

Knowing what to expect β€” and that medical support can ease it dramatically β€” makes the process more manageable. You don't have to white-knuckle this alone.

Fentanyl withdrawal typically begins within 8-24 hours of last use, peaks at 2-4 days, and gradually improves over 7-14 days β€” sometimes longer than other opioids because fentanyl can store in body tissues. Trying to detox alone from fentanyl is one of the leading causes of relapse and overdose β€” both because withdrawal is brutal, and because reduced tolerance after a few days dry dramatically increases overdose risk if relapse happens. Medical support changes this equation completely.

πŸ’ͺ Physical Symptoms

Severe muscle aches, restless legs, sweating, chills, goosebumps, runny nose, watery eyes, yawning, dilated pupils. Often more intense than other opioid withdrawal.

🀒 GI Symptoms

Severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps. Risk of dangerous dehydration is real β€” this is one reason medical supervision helps.

😰 Emotional Symptoms

Intense anxiety, depression, panic, mood swings, restlessness, and feelings of hopelessness. The mental withdrawal often hits harder than the physical.

😴 Sleep Disruption

Profound insomnia is common β€” and can last for weeks. Vivid dreams, restless sleep, and exhaustion that interferes with daily life.

🧠 Intense Cravings

Powerful, intrusive urges to use that peak around days 3-5. This is where MAT makes the biggest difference for fentanyl recovery specifically.

⚠️ Tolerance Loss Risk

If you go a few days without fentanyl, your tolerance drops fast. Returning to your previous dose can cause overdose. This is why supervised tapering with MAT is safer.

How We Treat Fentanyl Use Disorder

Our approach combines medical care, counseling, and ongoing support β€” all in an outpatient setting so you can continue your life while you recover.

1

Comprehensive Assessment

We evaluate your use, withdrawal status, overdose history, and goals to build a treatment plan β€” and to ensure outpatient care is medically appropriate for your situation.

2

Medication-Assisted Treatment

FDA-approved medications dramatically reduce cravings, ease withdrawal, and lower overdose risk. MAT is the gold standard for fentanyl use disorder per the FDA, SAMHSA, and major medical organizations.

3

Counseling & Support

Individual and group therapy that addresses underlying causes β€” pain, trauma, mental health, family relationships β€” because lasting recovery requires more than medication alone.

4

Long-Term Care

Fentanyl use disorder is a chronic medical condition. We stay with you for the long haul β€” adjusting your plan as life evolves and recovery takes shape.

For Families Watching This Crisis Unfold

If you have a loved one using fentanyl, you've probably been terrified for a long time. We see you. Here's what we know β€” and what we can do together.

πŸ«‚ You're Not Alone

Thousands of families across the Tri-Cities region are living with this same fear. Our free Thursday night family support group on Zoom is open to anyone β€” no patient required.

πŸ’Š Get Naloxone (Narcan)

If your loved one uses opioids, having naloxone in your home could save their life. It's available over-the-counter in most pharmacies in TN and VA. Carry it. Know how to use it.

πŸ“ž You Can Call Us First

Family members are welcome to call us directly β€” even if your loved one isn't ready yet. We can walk through options, share resources, and help you prepare for the conversation.

🚫 Don't Wait for "Ready"

Many people enter treatment ambivalent. Waiting for someone to be 100% ready often means waiting for a tragedy. Treatment can begin during ambivalence β€” that's normal.

Why Choose Emmaus for Fentanyl Recovery?

We've been treating opioid use disorder since 2006. We've adapted as the crisis evolved. Here's what makes us different.

🀝 No Judgment, Ever

You won't be lectured. You won't be shamed. Whatever brought you here β€” including overdoses, relapses, or jail β€” you're welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fentanyl Treatment

If you don't see your question here, just call us β€” we're happy to talk through anything, no judgment.

What is fentanyl use disorder?
Fentanyl use disorder is a recognized medical condition where fentanyl use causes significant distress, impairment, or harm in your daily life. Like all substance use disorders, it's a medical diagnosis β€” not a moral failing. Fentanyl's extreme potency makes the condition more dangerous than other opioid use disorders, but also more treatable when caught and addressed.
I overdosed recently. Should I come in?
Yes. A recent overdose is one of the strongest predictors of another overdose β€” and treatment dramatically reduces that risk. We won't judge you, ask invasive questions about how it happened, or report you. We'll just help. Please call 423-202-3008.
How quickly can I start treatment?
In most cases, same day or next day. We verify your insurance, schedule a medical evaluation, and start care quickly. With fentanyl specifically, we try to prioritize patients in acute crisis or recent overdose situations. Don't wait β€” call 423-202-3008.
Can MAT really work for fentanyl, given how strong it is?
Yes. While fentanyl's extreme potency means some patients require careful medication management and possibly higher initial doses, FDA-approved MAT medications are effective for fentanyl use disorder. SAMHSA, the FDA, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and other major medical organizations all recognize MAT as the gold standard for opioid use disorder including fentanyl.
Do you offer medical detox?
No. Emmaus is an outpatient clinic that provides medication-assisted treatment and counseling. We don't provide 24-hour medical detoxification. If you need supervised medical detox first, we'll help you find an appropriate provider β€” then we're here for the long-term recovery work afterward. Many patients begin MAT directly without needing residential detox first; we'll assess your specific situation.
What if I'm using fentanyl mixed with other substances?
Polysubstance use is common with fentanyl β€” including unintentional exposure when fentanyl contaminates other drugs. Tell our team honestly what you've been using; we won't judge, and accurate information helps us build the safest, most effective treatment plan. We address polysubstance situations as part of comprehensive care.
Will my insurance cover fentanyl treatment?
In most cases, yes. The federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires insurers to cover substance use disorder treatment the same as any other medical condition. We accept Medicare, Medicaid, TennCare, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Aetna, and most major commercial plans. We verify benefits for free with no obligation.
How much does fentanyl treatment cost without insurance?
Our self-pay rates are intentionally affordable: $150 for your initial intake, $100 for weekly visits, $150 for biweekly visits, and $250 for monthly visits. We never want cost to be the reason you don't get help. Payment plans are also available.
Will my employer find out I'm in treatment?
No. Federal law (42 CFR Part 2) provides extra confidentiality protections for substance use treatment beyond standard HIPAA. We cannot disclose your treatment to employers, family, or anyone else without your written consent.
I've relapsed before. Will I be turned away?
Absolutely not. Relapse is part of many people's recovery journey β€” especially with fentanyl, which is unforgiving. We don't view relapse as failure or grounds for dismissal from care. When patients stumble, we adjust the plan. We've helped people who've been through multiple programs that didn't stick.
How long will I be in treatment?
Treatment length is highly individual. Some patients use MAT for months, others for years, others long-term. Research consistently shows that longer engagement with treatment leads to better outcomes β€” and with fentanyl specifically, premature discontinuation carries significant overdose risk. Your provider will work with you on what makes sense for your situation and goals.
Can my family come with me?
Yes. Family members are welcome to attend appointments with you when you want them there. We also offer a free family support group on Thursday nights via Zoom β€” open to anyone affected by a loved one's substance use, even if they're not yet ready for treatment themselves.
