About Us
Faith-Supported. Patient-Focused. Life-Changing.
For nearly 20 years, we've been walking alongside our community through addiction recovery — treating people like family, never like a problem to be managed.
Our Story
Why we started Emmaus — and why we're still here, almost two decades later.
Emmaus Medical & Counseling was founded in 2006 on a simple, urgent idea: addiction is a medical condition, not a moral failure — and people deserve to be treated that way.
In the years since, our region has been hit hard by the opioid crisis. We've watched it tear apart families, neighbors, and entire communities. We've also watched something else happen — recovery. Real recovery. The kind that lets a parent show up for their kids again, lets a worker keep their job, lets a person rediscover who they were before addiction took the wheel.
We've grown from a single clinic to three locations across Tennessee and Virginia — Johnson City, Bulls Gap, and Weber City — plus virtual care that reaches anyone with a phone or computer. But our approach hasn't changed since day one: meet people where they are, treat them like family, and never give up on them.
We're faith-supported — which means we believe in the dignity of every person who walks through our doors. But we're never faith-forced. Whether you come from deep faith, no faith, or somewhere in between, you belong here.
What We Stand For
Five principles that guide every patient interaction, every decision, every day.
No Judgment, Ever
You won't be lectured. You won't be shamed. Whatever brought you here, you're welcome. Addiction is a medical issue — period.
Faith-Supported, Not Forced
Faith informs our compassion, not our requirements. Patients of all backgrounds — religious or not — receive the same care.
Treated Like Family
Not a number, not a case file, not a billing code. Real conversations with real people who care about how you're doing today.
Evidence-Based Care
Our treatment uses FDA-approved medications and proven counseling methods. Compassion doesn't replace science — it strengthens it.
We Don't Give Up
Relapse isn't failure — it's information. When someone stumbles, we adjust the plan. We've helped patients other programs gave up on.
Who We Serve
The majority of our patients are everyday hardworking people from the communities around us. They're parents, employees, neighbors, and friends. Many have struggled with addiction for years — sometimes decades — before finding the courage to ask for help.
Addiction doesn't discriminate. We've treated patients from every background, age, profession, and walk of life. What unites them is one thing: they recognized they needed help and wanted to feel like themselves again.
- Adults struggling with opioid use disorder
- Patients seeking treatment for alcohol use disorder
- Family members worried about a loved one
- People who've tried other programs that didn't stick
- Individuals seeking privacy and discretion in their care
- Patients who want outpatient care, not residential treatment
Most Patients Are Surprised
At how affordable treatment is, how non-judgmental the team feels, and how quickly they start feeling like themselves again. The hardest step is reaching out — the rest is easier than they expected.

What Patients & Families Say
The stories behind the statistics — real people, real recovery, real life.
By far the best place I've been to in 10 years. Emmaus has been a positive change for me. I'm treated like I matter — everyone here is nice and caring. I love that it's a non-judgmental place.
My husband had tried two other programs. What's different about Emmaus is that they didn't give up when he relapsed. They just adjusted the plan. He's been stable for over a year now.
If you're looking for a true 'home,' this is where your journey begins. You will be loved and cared for. Your voice will be heard. This is where love begins, and addiction ends.
